Learn to surf with confidence

Have you ever thought about learning to surf to gain a better understanding of the ocean or perhaps to improve your surfing technique?

Lightbulb Community Education is running two unique courses which will steer participants in the right direction which are personally catered to improve their surfing and understanding of the ocean.

Course facilitator, Will Forgan-Smith of Broadbeach Surf School who has over ten years surfing experience said there are two courses for Gold Coasters to choose from.

“The first caters for the absolute beginner and provides a comprehensive introduction to surfing.

“This confidence building course will also help students to understand the ocean and teach surf awareness and safe surfing skills.

“The aim is to impart the necessary skills and knowledge for participants to confidently surf unassisted.

“We also cover tips on ways to develop physical fitness required for surfing and a healthy lifestyle,“ he said.

Will said the second course is more tailored towards people who have already surfed but want to improve their technique.

“Participants will firstly be assessed on their current skill levels and goals.

“We then build on the technique, providing a deeper understanding of the ocean and skills needed to ride amongst it.

“Students will learn about rips, waves, where to surf and where not to surf, equipment selection and maintenance, how to stand, turn and ride the unbroken waves, and everything in between and beyond.

“In each of the courses we conduct two classes in the classroom but we do ask students to come prepared for the surf every lesson, because if the surf is good, you will be in the water,” Will said.

The courses commence on Sunday, 1 May until Sunday 5 June 2011.
