Antique and Furniture Restoration

Have fun and enjoy the new confidence of bringing your wonderful old piece of furniture back to its former glory in a traditional way. This course is hands-on where you will work with your own project and learn the techniques required to do a quality restoration.

Entry requirements

You must wear strong, enclosed footwear. Clothing should not be of a flowing nature, preferably fitted garments to prevent clothing becoming caught in moving machinery.

Student instructions

For Workplace Health & Safety reasons you are not permitted to enter the TAFE workshops without closed in shoes.
The project you will be working on will be discussed at the first class.

Topics

  • Students will be taught how to look at their restoration piece with a simple eye, to observe how their piece was constructed, so it can be pulled apart the same way if joints are loose, this is very important. I can turn a complicated job into a simple one.
  • Students will learn minor repairs to chairs, including breaks in legs and runners, doweling broken joints. Learn how to use a drill if needed. Repairs to drawer runners and split tops on tables or chests.
  • They will learn how to glue and clamp joints of whatever description in a proper manner.
  • Projects like repairing and veneering old sewing machines.
  • Learning how to fill holes using a variety of fillers, also how to fix warps and dints in timber.
  • Students can also tackle picture frame repairs, including repairing the plaster work around the frame
