Introduction to Therapeutic Full Body Massage

There are 5 places available at Southport Campus GCIT .
 

This course is designed for those wishing to gain confidence and skill in their ability to touch, in a sensitive and informed manner, friends, relatives or acquaintances in need of care.
You will learn an ordered sequence of massage techniques based on Swedish massage to cover the whole body. The general physiological effects and contraindications of massage. Basic skeletal, muscular and circulation systems to gain a clear image of the structures underlaying the skin. To integrate body awareness of both giver and receiver, observe energy exchange and emaotional aspects which may be triggered by specific techniques. Students are encouraged to work on each other in variable pairs to gain experience in contacting a variety of body structures.

Student Instructions

What to wear: It is advisable to wear loose comfortable clothing. Skirts or tight fitting jeans are not suitable
What to bring: Please bring 2 towels, a small bottle of olive oil, a water bottle with screw cap (no spills), a notebook and pen

Topics

Week 1: Introduction,General Physiological Effects and Contraindications of Massage. Classification, techniques and effects of massage movements. Muscles of the Lower Limb (Anterior), Massage to front of Lower Limb.
Week 2: Skeletal system. Muscles of abdomen and chest. Massage to abdomen and chest.
Week 3: Muscular System. Muscles of Arm, Shoulder Girdle, Face and neck. Massage to Arm, Shoulder, Face & Neck.
Week 4: Circulation System, Muscles of Lower Limb (Posterior). Massage to back of Lower Limb.
Week 5: Muscles of the back. Massage the back.
Week 6: Massage to the whole body.

Career Prospects

Although this course focuses on massaging faily and friends it will also introduce you to the basics for massage for a career.

Outcomes

You will know how to use the Swedish ordered sequence of massage techniques to cover the whole body and have a basic knowledge of the general physiological effects and contraindications of massage as well as basic skeletal, muscular and circulation system.
