Traditional French Polishing and Country Finishes
This course is ideal for learning how to repair missing inlay on boxes, repair the plaster around picture frames or wooden ones. You will learn how to revive and re-polish without affecting the original polish. You will also learn how to do country finishes and the art of traditional French polishing which beautifies any old gem. This is an ideal way to gain experience and confidence in the gentle art of restoration.
Entry requirements
To enter the TAFE workshops you need to wear strong, enclosed footwear. Clothing should not be of a flowing nature, preferably fitted garments to prevent clothing becoming caught in any equipment.

Topics
- Students will learn how to strip off old finishes or paint without using chemical strippers
- They will learn safe methods and proper uses of equipment, eg scrapers, heat guns, soldering irons, how chemical solvents and strippers work and what not to do.
- What type of sandpapers to use for the various stages of restoration
a. how to sand
b. fill holes with a variety of fillers
c. how to fill the grain on porous surfaces if necessary ( in preparation for French Polishing)
d. how to prepare a surface ready for the finishing methods
- Students will learn various staining methods and products
- Country finishes using superior waxes
- Traditional French Polishing is an art I am sure all students will enjoy
- Students will learn how to revive old pieces without stripping the original French polish.

Practical – hands – on course. Students will work on their own project, also you will be able to observe what other students are working on, this will broaden your knowledge as well.
