This overview gives you the opportunity to analyse what web technologies are available, how they can benefit your organisation and which direction you want to go with them. Topics include the business potential of blogs, wikis and twitter and how to set them up. This course will give you the knowledge to enable you to diversify your web strategies and use social networking, helping make the internet really work for your business.

To make use of social networks you do not need to be an experienced writer or to know the intricacies of Microsoft Office. One of the delights of social networking (and of blogging) is that they are tools that almost anyone can use.

Entry Requirements

This module assumes you have basic computer skills including access to the internet and keyboard use.

Increasingly, potential employers are looking at social networking sites in their efforts to profile potential employees. Social networking skills can be used purely to keep in contact with friends and acquaintances although increasingly, they are being used to grow business networks and develop sales leads.

Presentation is complemented with discussion and exercises plus an opportunity to explore different aspects of social networking. Outcomes

Participants will gain a broad understanding of the use and abuse of online social networking and how such networks can be used to enhance personal and business engagement. You will also learn some of the pitfalls to avoid.

This course will introduce you to web analytics that will give you valuable insights into your website traffic and online marketing campaign effectiveness. Find out how many visits your website is actually receiving, where the people are coming from and what they are looking at while in your site, as well as the key words used in searching for your site and invaluable Search Engine Optimisation information.

Entry Requirements

Basic computer skills are required as well as some knowledge of websites and how to use a browser.

Please bring a pen and note paper and a memory stick/USB flash drive for saving and taking your work home.

You will also need:
Username and password for Google or Gmail account and Access details to your website which includes your website address and the Username and password from your website host.

That’s just the first of many tips and techniques you’ll learn in this fast moving session on the latest way to keep your business in front of potential customers. Just one element in social networking, it is arguably the most important, yet one of the hardest to implement with real effect. We’ll show you how.

Week 1 – Introducing a range of topics emphasis on social networks and blogs – also Skype and image optimisation with practical examples.
Week 2 – Social Networking – in detail and different options available. Elements common to most SNS as well as demographics of various popular sites to help you decide which is the right one for you or creating your own website may be the answer for you.
Week 3 – Blogging and microblogging. Multimedia such as YouTube (for video) or Flickr (for photographic records). How to set up an manage a blog and review l examples of local companies.
Week 4 – focuses on visibility. This module will discuss the techniques for getting yourself found on the internet. The course ends with a discussion of payment gateways – from PayPal to setting up full merchant facilities.

Delivery Style

These modules are designed for interactive learning. While a course manual will be available to students, much of the classroom presentations and discussion will focus on the needs of class members. Each session includes a tutorial session in which students can test their ideas or be shown possible solutions for their own individual needs.

Outcomes

At the end of this course you will be able to design a web strategy for your own business that focuses on your strengths and compensates for any weaknesses.
