Have fun and enjoy the new confidence of bringing your wonderful old piece of furniture back to its former glory in a traditional way. This course is hands-on where you will work with your own project and learn the techniques required to do a quality restoration.

Entry requirements

You must wear strong, enclosed footwear. Clothing should not be of a flowing nature, preferably fitted garments to prevent clothing becoming caught in moving machinery.

Student instructions

For Workplace Health & Safety reasons you are not permitted to enter the TAFE workshops without closed in shoes.
The project you will be working on will be discussed at the first class.

Topics

  • Students will be taught how to look at their restoration piece with a simple eye, to observe how their piece was constructed, so it can be pulled apart the same way if joints are loose, this is very important. I can turn a complicated job into a simple one.
  • Students will learn minor repairs to chairs, including breaks in legs and runners, doweling broken joints. Learn how to use a drill if needed. Repairs to drawer runners and split tops on tables or chests.
  • They will learn how to glue and clamp joints of whatever description in a proper manner.
  • Projects like repairing and veneering old sewing machines.
  • Learning how to fill holes using a variety of fillers, also how to fix warps and dints in timber.
  • Students can also tackle picture frame repairs, including repairing the plaster work around the frame

MIG welding

Learn and understand the techniques and safety requirements associated with (Gas Metal Arc) MIG welding.

Entry Requirements

None

Student Instructions

You must comply with Workplace, Health and Safety requirements as follows: a shirt with long sleeves, long pants and closed in shoes must be worn in class. Shirt and trousers can be old, but to prevent burns must be of Cotton, NOT polyester. Long hair should be tied back.

You will also need to bring your own welding gloves – these can be purchased at Bunning for approx $10. If you already have a welding helmet please bring that – if you don’t have a helmet one will be supplied.

TAFE catering is closed on Saturdays, so make sure you bring along some lunch.

Topics

Gas metal welding theory, setting up, the types of wire, gas and metals used, the process followed to achieve a quality weld.

Delivery Style

Theory and hands-on.
Please note tutor may change due to unforseen circumstances.

Outcomes

You will be able to safely operate a MIG welder with mild steel. A certificate of participation will be issued on completion of the course.

Practical Woodwork - make your own coffee table

In this course you will make a coffee table (all material is supplied). Also covered in this course is workshop safety, hand and electric tools, industrial machinery and how to select materials for projects.

Traditional French Polishing and Country Finishes

This course is ideal for learning how to repair missing inlay on boxes, repair the plaster around picture frames or wooden ones. You will learn how to revive and re-polish without affecting the original polish. You will also learn how to do country finishes and the art of traditional French polishing which beautifies any old gem. This is an ideal way to gain experience and confidence in the gentle art of restoration.

  • Students will learn how to strip off old finishes or paint without using chemical strippers
  • They will learn safe methods and proper uses of equipment, eg scrapers, heat guns, soldering irons, how chemical solvents and strippers work and what not to do.
  • What type of sandpapers to use for the various stages of restoration

a. how to sand
b. fill holes with a variety of fillers
c. how to fill the grain on porous surfaces if necessary ( in preparation for French Polishing)
d. how to prepare a surface ready for the finishing methods

  • Students will learn various staining methods and products
  • Country finishes using superior waxes
  • Traditional French Polishing is an art I am sure all students will enjoy
  • Students will learn how to revive old pieces without stripping the original French polish.
